Better air for Bogotá, clean energy for the world
Since 2007, Biogás Colombia has been the benchmark project for circular economy and climate mitigation in Colombia, based in Bogotá
Two business units, one commitment to sustainability
We process the gas produced by the anaerobic decomposition of solid waste at the Doña Juana landfill, creating solutions that reduce emissions, generate clean energy, and improve air quality in the Colombian capital.
Emission reductions
Collecting, piping, and safely combusting 13,500 m³ of biogas every day, reducing its dierct release into the atmosphere and avoiding methane emissions.
Renewable power generation
Generation of clean and constant energy (15 MW) for the interconnection grid, utilizing an otherwise unused resource (biomass).
Precision technology for biogas
- Biogas production
Every year, more than 2.2 million tons of solid waste are deposited 24/7 at the Doña Juana landfill. The anaerobic decomposition of the organic content (52%) produces biogas, a mixture consisting mainly of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
- Extraction and piping
The biogas is extracted via vertical shafts connected to a 76 km long pipeline network, which transports the biogas to our treatment and utilization plant. This is an automated process in which pressure and flow are controlled to ensure a stable flow of more than 13,500 m³ per hour.
- Treatment and controlled destruction
In the plant, the gas passes through four blowers and three flares, each with a capacity of 5,000 Nm³/h, where it is burned in a controlled manner. This step prevents the direct release of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases in the world.
- Use for power generation
The biogas is converted into clean electrical energy in German generators. This energy is fed into the national grid.
