From waste to energy: a reliable and renewable source
Since 2016, through our Landfill Gas to Energy project, Biogás Colombia has been converting captured biogas into clean electricity available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are the first and only company in Colombia with the technical and operational capability to do so. We are the first and only company in Colombia with this technical and operational capacity.
Our process combines the extraction, purification, and use of biogas through MWM motor generators designed to operate at an altitude of 2,850 m with high-purity biogas. We currently operate two power plants connected to the El Tesoro 11.4 kV circuit (Usme Substation) and the Colmotores 34.5 kV circuit (Bosa Substation), ensuring grid stability and a continuous power supply.
Capacity and expansion
As of January 2026, our facilities generate 1.7 MW and are expected to reach an installed capacity of 15 MW by December 2026. This expansion will also increase the generation of carbon credits beyond the current 800,000 tCO₂e per year, improving process efficiency and increasing the amount of clean electricity supplied to Colombia’s National Interconnected System.
Technology and efficiency
Our fleet of nine state-of-the-art MWM TCG 2020 gas engine generators (20-cylinder units, 2024 generation), each with a capacity of 1,813 kW at 2,850 meters above sea level, generates electricity at 480 V low voltage. Each generator is connected to a dedicated step-up transformer (11.4 kV or 34.5 kV) and equipped with protection systems that ensure a safe and efficient connection to the local power grid.
