We capture methane, reduce emissions, and generate impact

Every day, thousands of tons of waste from Bogotá's households end up at the Doña Juana landfill. There, we have implemented a system for capturing, treating, and destroying the methane produced during the decomposition of this waste. Instead of releasing the methane uncontrolled, we treat it in special flares at 995 °C, which removes organic compounds and ammonia and prevents it from having a direct impact on the atmosphere.

Thanks to this intervention, we prevent 800,000 tCO₂e from entering the atmosphere each year, which is equivalent to removing 400,000 vehicles from the capital's roads or planting 160 million new trees. Our project thus actively contributes to achieving Colombia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by more than 5%.

The results of the project (previously registered as a CDM with the UNFCCC) are verified and registered in the EcoRegistry according to the Cercarbono standard (project 051), validated by ICONTEC, and certified by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. We have a network of 196 gas extraction wells, 76 km of pipelines, 4 blowers, and 3 flares, each capable of destroying up to 5,000 Nm³/h of gas. This infrastructure ensures continuous, safe, and efficient operation. This infrastructure guarantees continuous, safe and efficient operation.
