We capture methane, reduce emissions, and generate impact
Every day, thousands of tonnes of household waste from Bogotá's households are delivered to the Doña Juana landfill. There, we operate a system for the capture, transport, and controlled destruction of the methane generated during the decomposition of this waste. Instead of allowing methane to be released uncontrolled into the atmosphere, it is treated in specialized enclosed flares at temperatures exceeding 900°C, eliminating traces of hydrogen sulfide, organic compounds, and ammonia while preventing atmospheric emissions and significantly reducing odor impacts.
Thanks to this operation, we prevent approximately 800,000 tCO₂e from being released into the atmosphere every year, which is equivalent to removing 400,000 vehicles from Bogotá's roads or planting 160 million trees. The project, registered with RENARE, contributes the equivalent of 59% of Colombia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) within the Integrated Waste Management category, and specifically 57% of the country's target for Biogas Flaring.
Methodology and certifications
The project’s additionality and mitigation results (previously registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project under the UNFCCC) are supported by our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications (SGS certification seals and links can be added here). They are also independently audited and verified by accredited Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs), including ICONTEC, and are registered on the EcoRegistry platform under the Cercarbono Standard (Project 051). Technical infrastructure
Our operation is supported by a network of more than 76 km of gas pipelines, 4 main blowers, and 3 enclosed flares, each capable of destroying up to 5,000 Nm³/h of biogas. This infrastructure enables the capture and extraction of biogas from more than 200 wells, ensuring continuous, safe, and efficient operation.
